Important Travel Information: Storm Goretti Expected to Cause Significant Disruption
Updated: 8 January 2026 (Version 1.3)
Please be aware that the Met Office has issued Amber and Yellow weather warnings for Storm Goretti on Thursday 8 January and Friday 9 January 2026. This storm is expected to bring widespread snow, ice, rain, and strong winds, which may significantly impact rail services across England, Wales, and Scotland.
In very cold weather conditions, snow and ice can accumulate on railway tracks, blocking points and affecting signalling. Ice can also coat electrified third rails and overhead power cables, preventing trains from drawing power and potentially leaving them stranded. Additionally, lines may be blocked or subject to temporary speed restrictions, leading to displaced trains and traincrew.
As a result, train services are highly likely to be subject to delays, diversions, and cancellations. We strongly advise all passengers to check their journey on National Rail Enquiries (nationalrail.co.uk) immediately before attempting to travel.
Train Operators Expected to Be Significantly Affected
At present, the following train companies are expecting to be significantly affected by the poor weather and may issue a ‘do not travel’ policy:
- Avanti West Coast
- CrossCountry
- East Midlands Railway
- LNER
- London Northwestern Railway
- Transpennine Express (specifically for travel between Manchester Piccadilly and Sheffield)
- Transport for Wales
- West Midlands Railway
All these operators are advising customers to check before they travel. Please note that the National Rail Enquiries real-time Journey Planner might not be showing all altered services immediately. Always check your entire journey for any changes, which could occur at advance or at short notice.
Ticket Date Validity During Storm Goretti
To assist passengers affected by Storm Goretti, the rail industry has collaborated to formulate a consistent policy for ticket validity. If your journey involves any of the impacted train operators listed above, or if you hold a through ticket, you may be able to travel on an alternative day.
Affected Tickets & Operators:
This policy applies to Anytime, Off-Peak, and Advance tickets, as well as Rovers and Rangers, and for customers travelling with Interrail and Britrail Passes for journeys with:
- Avanti West Coast
- CrossCountry
- East Midlands Railway
- LNER
- London Northwestern Railway
- Transpennine Express – for travel between Manchester Piccadilly and Sheffield only
- Transport for Wales
- West Midlands Railway
New Travel Dates:
If your ticket is dated or valid for travel on:
- Thursday 8 January 2026
- Friday 9 January 2026
You can use the ticket on any day up to and including Monday 12 January 2026 (and until 04:29 on Tuesday 13 January 2026).
Important Notes on Ticket Validity:
- This flexibility applies whether your rail journey is wholly with one of the directly affected operators, or if it involves connecting services to, from, or via an affected operator’s services.
- If your ticket includes travel across or within London, please refer to the ‘Crossing London’ section below, as special conditions apply.
- Where you hold a seat reservation, this **cannot be guaranteed or honoured** if you choose to travel on a different day.
- Customers who wish to change an Advance ticket to travel outside of this special easement period are permitted to do so under the usual Advance ticket terms and conditions.
Connecting Journeys
Train operators that are not directly impacted by Storm Goretti will accept connections or through tickets on the alternative dates shown above. For example, if you were due to travel to or from an affected area, your ticket should be accepted on the extended validity dates.
Customers using a combination of more than one ticket to complete their journey will be treated in the same way as if a single through ticket were held.
Mutual Ticket Acceptance
In the event of your service being severely affected by disruption caused by the storm, cross-industry ticket acceptance may be made available. Any mutual ticket acceptance with other operators will be communicated locally by the train operators when and if an agreement is made.
Where mutual ticket acceptance is in place on any given date with another operator, customers may use the services of either the affected train operator or the other operator to complete their journey on that date, regardless of the type of ticket purchased.
Crossing London Journeys
If your ticket includes a cross-London marker [† + Maltese Cross] denoting validity on London Underground and DLR services, please note the following:
- These services will **only be valid on the specific date shown on your original ticket.**
- If you choose to travel on an alternative day using the extended validity policy, you will need to purchase a separate ticket or use ‘Pay As You Go’ (contactless or Oyster) for the London Underground or DLR segment of your journey.
Transport for London (TfL) has confirmed that London Buses or London Trams **cannot be used as an alternative** on any day, nor can London Underground or DLR services be used outside of the valid route and on a date other than that shown on your original ticket. Customers will be expected to pay for their TfL journeys as normal.
Refund Information
We want to remind you that you always have the option to cancel your journey and obtain a refund for your ticket.
-
For customers who choose not to travel at all, standard refund policies will apply. If you decide not to travel because the train you intended to use is cancelled, significantly delayed, or rescheduled after you purchased your ticket, or if your reservation will not be honoured, you will be able to claim a **full refund with no administration fee** charged for your unused ticket (excluding Season Tickets). This is in line with National Rail Conditions of Travel Condition 30.
-
If a ‘Do Not Travel’ message is in place from a train operator, you will also be able to claim a **full refund with no administration fee** charged.
-
If you have a Return ticket and they do not/cannot make their outward journey because of disruption, you are permitted a full refund on their ticket, even if the return journey itself is not affected by the storm. The same applies if the return journey is planned for a day affected by the storm but the outward journey is not.
Please contact us at MyTrainTicket.co.uk to arrange your refund.
